Mobilizing Newborns in Latin America and the Caribbean
During the past three years, ACCESS has collaborated with partner organizations—including Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), UNICEF, USAID, Save the Children, USAID, BASICS and CORE Group—to develop a regional strategy for newborn care. The development of the Neonatal Regional Strategy is the culmination of a collaborative process that began in April 2005 during a meeting to commemorate World Health Day in Washington, D.C. A regional workshop was conducted in Antigua, Guatemala in February 2006 to review and discuss the Neonatal Regional Strategy. The meeting was attended by representatives from ministries of health (MOH) of all countries in the region, members of professional associations, and representatives from PAHO, USAID, ACCESS and other local and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).
ACCESS attended the Executive Committee meeting of PAHO, where a resolution was proposed to accept the Neonatal Regional Strategy. In September 2006, all MOH in the region met to endorse the final Resolution of the Neonatal Regional Strategy. ACCESS, together with PAHO and USAID, assisted in finalizing, translating and printing the final document. The strategy has been translated into four languages (English, Spanish, French and Portuguese) and disseminated to important stakeholders in every country of the region. ACCESS coordinated with partners to launch the Strategy at PAHO headquarters in June 2006, and is assisting in further disseminating the document to MOH and NGO partners in 11 focus countries in the region as well as US-based partner organizations.
