Strengthening Maternal and Newborn Health and Family Planning
The ACCESS programs in Haiti aim to strengthen family planning (FP) services through a range of interventions
and increase the timely use of key maternal and newborn health (MNH) practices, including the prevention and treatment of
mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). In addition to advocacy and policy formulation, the programs provide training
and support the development and reinforcement of clinical standards.
ACCESS is developing institutional and human capacity in Haitian health facilities for PMTCT services and
FP—the latter focusing on long-term reversible and nonreversible methods. With funding from The President's Emergency
Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), ACCESS is improving PMTCT services at 23 sites that service the country’s most vulnerable
populations. ACCESS is providing technical assistance for mentoring providers in the integration of PMTCT and MNH services,
improving data collection and monitoring at the sites, and establishing linkages with community-based HIV support groups,
as well as for other activities.
ACCESS is also implementing a youth initiative that focuses on increasing young women’s use of FP and MNH
services through community-based initiatives.
ACCESS-FP activities in Haiti include the development of a participatory reproductive health model for young
girls and young mothers. This initiative will replicate a successful youth reproductive heath model from Nepal. The model
focuses on increasing young women’s (<24) use of family planning, maternal and neonatal services, including PMTCT, through
community-based initiatives that are closely linked with available health services.
