Expanding Postabortion Care and Family Planning Services
ACCESS supports USAID/Guinea’s 1998-2005 Country Strategic objective (increased use of FP/MCH and STI/AIDS prevention services and products) through the provision of technical assistance to expand postabortion care (PAC) services to Guinea’s Forest Region. Simultaneously, with funds leveraged from UNFPA,
Jhpiego—the lead partner on the ACCESS Program—supports the integration of PAC services into five high-volume urban medical centers in Conakry, coupled with the application of a performance and quality improvement approach.
Currently, ACCESS and
ACCESS-FP are working alongside other implementing partners in Guinea to improve capacity for delivery of critical family planning and maternal health services. ACCESS technical assistance is focusing on national-level and facility-based support with particular attention given to groups with high levels of unmet need—such as postpartum women and PAC clients.
ACCESS-FP is providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Public Health’s National Safe Motherhood Program and the Division of Reproductive Health to finalize their national plan for repositioning family planning (FP). These efforts will be the foundation on which to effect change at the facility level through advocacy for a more diverse menu of FP method mix. Through further strengthening of PAC sites in the USAID intervention zone, ACCESS-FP continues to strengthen PAC services, including FP. The program is also expanding a performance and quality approach previously piloted in Conakry through revision of PAC performance standards to reflect an expanding menu of FP options. ACCESS-FP collaborates closely with the Faisons Ensemble Project by obtaining their input during updating of performance standards and reflecting elements of good governance as appropriate in clinical performance standards.
ACCESS is working with the national faculty of medicine to develop an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) curriculum and revise the existing FP curriculum. This initiative will lead to increased capacity of future medical doctors in Guinea to provide effective EmONC and FP services.
