Improving Access to High-Quality Maternal and Newborn Health Services

Staff and childbirth simulator

ACCESS is assisting the Cambodia Ministry of Health and local key stakeholders to improve the availability of and access to high-quality, sustainable maternal and newborn health services through an Associate Award from USAID. This three-year program builds on previous ACCESS work and has three aims: to strengthen maternal and newborn health policies and programs to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality; improve the capacity of the Cambodian government to increase access to skilled providers; and expand essential maternal and newborn care interventions through existing health services.

ACCESS/Cambodia will introduce a project to demonstrate the safety, acceptability, feasibility, and program effectiveness (SAFE) of community-based distribution of misoprostol by skilled providers and trained community health volunteers to reduce postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) at home births in Cambodia. This demonstration project will inform scale up of this approach throughout the country. In addition, the project will include a component aimed to expand use of the active management of the third stage of labor, an internationally accepted best practice for the prevention of PPH, among deliveries conducted by skilled providers.
