Christian and Islamic sermon guides now available

17 August 2009

The ACCESS Program is happy to announce the release of two publications to help religious leaders change attitudes and behavior toward maternal and newborn health:

Because Bishops, Ministers, Imams and Muftis have a strong influence over their constituencies, these sermon guides are a powerful vehicle for promoting constructive behavior change for saving mothers and babies from preventable deaths. They includes Quranic texts, Sunnah, Hadith, and Biblical scriptures as a way to frame discussions on Safe Motherhood issues from a faith perspective with two purposes: 1) to educate religious leaders about maternal and newborn health issues; and 2) to provide guidance for incorporating evidence-based and field tested Safe Motherhood teachings in their sermons/religious discourses and counseling of couples.

For further information and/or copies please contact IMA World Health via email: imainfo@imaworldhealth.org or laurawatts@imaworldhealth.org.

About ACCESS

The ACCESS Program is the U.S. Agency for International Development’s global program to improve maternal and newborn health. The ACCESS Program works to expand coverage, access and use of key maternal and newborn health services across a continuum of care from the household to the hospital—with the aim of making quality health services accessible for women and newborns.

Jhpiego implements the program in partnership with Save the Children, Constella Futures, the Academy for Educational Development, the American College of Nurse-Midwives and IMA World Health.
