Postpartum family planning: A review of programmatic approaches through the first year postpartum
May 2008
On 15 May, the ACCESS-FP Program
hosted a meeting for 48 participants from 22 organizations at the Hotel Monaco
in Washington, DC. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange experiences and
lessons learned in postpartum family planning (PPFP) programming, share
pre-tested tools, and prioritize topics for research and learning.
Participants included representatives from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and cooperating agencies working in family planning and maternal and child health. Topics included postnatal and well-baby care,
and community PPFP. Another session developed an initial research
agenda and revealed common themes around the return to fertility, the lactational amenorrhea method (LAM)
and the transition to other FP methods, identifying ideal opportunities for integrating PPFP information and services, and documenting the strategic importance of PPFP.
