Experts discuss effective messages for postpartum family planning
May 2008
Members of the Postpartum Family of Practice participated in an online forum on "Key Messages for Postpartum Family Planning (PPFP)" sponsored by ACCESS-FP in April. Initiated to encourage dialogue about the content and adaptation of PPFP messages used in behavior change communication interventions, the event attracted contributions from around the world—including those from Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, India and Mexico.
During the forum, experts provided an overview of key content for PPFP messages. They also shared experiences and insights on the use of effective messages with particular groups, including women, married adolescent girls, mothers-in-law, men, religious leaders, and community members. Topics raised during the forum included:
- The definition of the PPFP period for the purposes of behavior change communication at the community level;
- Core content of messages;
- Important barriers to address;
- Timing and content of message delivery;
- Effective channels of communication; and
- Coordinating messages given at the community level with those provided at the health facility.
The PPFP Community of Practice serves as a global forum for those interested in learning and exchanging information, tools and resources related to family planning through the first year postpartum. To request membership, visit the
