Global forum discusses "LAM and the Transition to Other Modern Methods"
April 2007
The ACCESS-FP Program hosted a global forum in March 2007 that provided state-of-the-art information
on the lactational amenorrhea method (LAM) of family planning and how the method links with other methods during the extended postpartum period.
The two-week forum featured resources, informational pieces and the opportunity for participants to
ask questions and share experiences.
Three well known “experts” contributed to the discussion and answered questions.
The experts were Dr. Marcos Arevalo (Institute for Reproductive Health, Georgetown University),
Dr. Miriam Labbok (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)
and Ms. Maryanne Stone-Jimenez (Academy for Educational Development).
Discussion topics included:
- Timing and frequency of counseling for LAM
- Advocacy for LAM
- Availability of information, education and communication (IEC) materials on LAM
- Promotion of LAM in high HIV prevalence settings
Highlights from the discussion included:
- Exchanges between members
- New resources contributed to the community by experts and members
- Interesting questions on programming and efficacy of LAM
- Emphasis on the need to train providers in LAM
