Share your experiences, challenges, and lessons learned, pose questions and
discuss with experts from around the world.
This forum will provide state-of-the-art information on the lactational
amenorrhea method of family planning and how the method links with other methods during the
extended postpartum period. Experts will answer your questions and provide insights on
programmatic implementation based on their own experiences.
Expert guests include Dr. Marcos Arevalo from Georgetown University,
Dr. Miriam Labbok from UNC/Chapel Hill, and Ms. Maryanne Stone-Jiménez from the Academy
for Educational Development.

Panel of Experts
Marcos Arevalo, MD, MPH, MA
Dr. Marcos Arevalo has over 20 years experience in FP/RH in Latin America, Asia
and Africa. Currently OBGYN faculty at Georgetown University, he has worked at
the field level in international FP programs as clinician, supervisor and trainer.
He has designed, implemented and evaluated numerous programs and research projects.
He has led teams of researchers conducting clinical trials and other studies of
family planning methods. Dr. Arevalo led the introduction of LAM to large service
delivery programs in several countries in Latin America, and is currently working
with public programs in Mali and Burkina Faso to reintroduce LAM. He serves on WHO
technical committees, and is the author of chapters in several books on FP, and
numerous papers published in peer reviewed journals. He is a frequent speaker
at professional and academic fora. His areas of interest include postpartum FP,
quality of care, and ethics in FP.
Miriam Labbok, MD, MPH, FACPM, IBCLC, FABM, IBCLC
Dr. Miriam Labbok is currently Professor of the Practice of Public Health, and
Director, Center for Excellence in Infant and Young Child Feeding, Department
of Maternal and Child Health, School of Public Health, UNC/Chapel Hill. She has
more than 30 years of research and programme work on maternal and child health
and nutrition, and is particularly known for the development of the Lactational
Amenorrhea Method for birthspacing, and studies of other health consequences
of breastfeeding. Previously, she served as the Senior Advisor on Infant and
Young Child Feeding and Care at UNICEF; Chief of Nutrition and of Maternal Health
in the Global Health Bureau and earlier as Medical Officer for Population Research
at USAID; Associate Professor Georgetown University Medical Center, adjunct
Associate Professor at Tulane and Johns Hopkins; and Preventive Medicine Resident
and Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.
Dr. Labbok has worked in about 50 countries, and has published more than 150
articles, abstracts and chapters. She is a founding member, past president and
Fellow in the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, Chair elect of the International
Health Section of APHA, and North American Representative to the World Alliance on
Breastfeeding Action, as well as serving on advisory boards of ILCA, LLLI, and IBLCE.
Maryanne Stone-Jiménez, MS
Ms. Stone-Jiménez is Public Health Specialist with a Master's degree in Biology.
She's a Lactation Consultant; Childbirth Educator; and La Leche League Leader who
has served as a Consultant, Community Outreach and Training Coordinator for the
LINKAGES/AED project. Her work has included the design and development of training
curricula and behavior change communication materials for infant and young child
feeding; implementation of community strategies; training of health professionals
and community health workers in infant and young child feeding, LAM, mother-to-mother
support group facilitation, use of educational materials, interpersonal counseling
and negotiation skills, Essential Nutrition Actions; training methodologies and
principles of adult education. She’s also served as a Country Director of Child
Survival Projects in Guatemala.
