27 January 2005
Baltimore, Md. – Blami Dao, MD, a Jhpiego advanced clinical
trainer and regional maternal and newborn health expert, has received a Distinguished Community Service
Award for Emergency Obstetric Care. The annual award was established by the International Federation of
Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) in collaboration with the Columbia University Mailman School of Public
Health’s Averting Maternal Death and Disability Program (AMDD) to enhance the prestige of safe motherhood
work. The award honors individuals like Dao who provide or facilitate emergency care of women in an
underserved population who are pregnant, in labor, delivering, or postpartum.
"Professor Dao has made a difference in the lives of countless women and newborns, and
his legacy will be the standard to which he holds himself, his students, and his colleagues: the highest
quality of care for the women and babies of the world who most need it," said Patricia Gomez, Clinical
Specialist with Jhpiego’s ACCESS Program.
A Professeur Agrégé of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ouagadougou and
Chief of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Service at Sanou Souro University Hospital in Bobo Dioulasso,
Burkina Faso, Dao was trained under Jhpiego’s Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) Program and has worked
as an MNH Regional Expert since 2001. To date, he has facilitated more than 30 courses reaching over
300 health care providers representing a variety of agencies, including the Ministry of Armed Forces,
the World Health Organization (WHO), Save the Children, UNICEF, and AMDD. He has worked and taught
in such diverse countries as Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Madagascar, and Haiti.
"Professor Dao’s commitment to his university students will result in health care
providers skilled in the evidence-based best practices that will save the lives of untold numbers of
women and babies," commented Dr. Harshad Sanghvi, Jhpiego’s Medical Director.
As part of this award, Dao’s Sanou Souro Hospital will receive a $5,000 grant. Dao will
also be recognized at the tri-annual FIGO World Congress on Gynecology and Obstetrics to be held
in Malaysia in 2006.
